China Syndrome is a rockin’ melodic power pop band from Vancouver who combine the driving pop hooks of Teenage Fanclub and XTC with liberal dollops of classic rock influences. The band recently released their fourth album, Hide in Plain Sight, which, like their previous three, was recorded and produced at Vancouver’s JC/DC Studio by David Carswell (The New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara, Destroyer, Apollo Ghosts, The Ford Pier Vengeance Trio). The new album plays to China Syndrome’s strengths: great musicianship and arrangements, memorable songs and thoughtful lyrics. The band has been actively promoting the album in 2019. The Georgia Straight has praised Hide in Plain Sight, stating the album “continues to showcase superb songwriting… with songs every bit as engaging, tuneful, angsty and varied in their influences;” The Vancouver Sun says it exemplifies “power pop done right… with a good sense of self-deprecation is always fun,” while BeatRoute feels the album demonstrates “interesting new layers to their sound.”
The Poubelles like a hook.Their original Pop-Rock (heavy on the ‘rock’) draws on influences from the 80s New Wave and the 90s Alternative Sound but with a twist all their own. Amber drums and sings songs of heartbreak and hopefulness, while Steve and Kent (guitars and bass) provide a catchy and riffy sonic bed.
